Collection: Kungsleden 2016

My first multi-day solo hike. A 100km autumn adventure in Swedish Lapland.

Admittedly, I was pretty ill-prepared for this trip. Prior to this, I had only done 1-3 day hikes in much friendlier weather. A couple of fortuitous decisions allowed me to complete the hike unscathed, but the wilderness of Swedish Lapland was an eye opening (and at times jaw dropping) experience that gave me a glimpse of what nature can be when it is respected, and of what it can be if it is underestimated.

While the entire Kungsleden stretches 440km across Sweden, my week long trip took me across the most popular stretch of it, the northernmost section well within the Arctic Circle. Short trees and shrubs still grow, but the treeline remains low, exposing the barren, snow covered mountain ranges that weave through the region. At night, as long as the sun goes down and clouds are kept at bay, the auroras are often at play. Glaciers, lakes and waterfalls complete the canvas, and providing water of source purer than most would experience in their lifetime.
